~Earth Water~ Background Knowledge The water cycle has been working for billions of years and all life on Earth depends on it; the Earth would be a pretty stale place without it. Earth's water always moves and changes states in a cycle from liquid to vapor to ice and back again. Water plays many different roles on the Earth; some at the south and north poles in ice caps; some as the snow and glaciers at the tops of high mountains; some in lakes and streams; some underground; some as vapor in the atmosphere; but mostly in the oceans.
