I have attended the #NaikuChat: Assessment discussion for Naiku users, on Thursday, September 17th. It was a great experience to see how teachers and/or pre-service teachers join together in the chat room and shared their thoughts. Through this education chat event, I have learned and gained new information about a potential technology for me to use in my future classroom. Naiku is a type of formative assessment software, a technology used in the classroom. It helps teachers to collect fast and accurate data on students’ learning progress. With the use of the application, teachers can assess their students anytime and anywhere. Also, it helps teachers to save time with grading and generating a gradebook. The most important of all is that Naiku helps teachers gain instant insight on their instruction by getting immediate feedback on student’s achievement and understanding of the concept. On the other hand, Naiku helps students to think about what they know and don’t know. Also, it can engage students to use research proven practices and motivate them to take more ownership over their learning.
Before this assignment, I do not have a twitter account. I only know twitter as a popular social media site that uses hash tags (#) in a unique ways. Therefore, when I think of using twitter in the education field, I immediately think of it as a bad and unnecessary technology tool. However, I was wrong. I found out Twitter is an excellent tool for consuming and learning for both teachers and students. I can follow people who will be useful to me based on location, subject, grade level, and technology being used. In addition, I think we can take advantage of Twitter’s format to keep our classes engaged and up-to-date on the latest technologies. The following are the examples of using Twitter in the classroom: teachers can tweet about upcoming due dates, tests, quizzes, or assignments to engage students in learning; Twitter can also connect classrooms with the community and the world as a communication tool. I strongly recommend educators to use Twitter, because it is a part of PLN (personal learning network) to connect, share, and network. Therefore, I believe education and Twitter can be synonymous if Twitter is used in ways that benefit educators and students.
