From the UEN K-2 Words Interactives, I could use the “Between the Lions’ Alphabet Soup Game” in my future Language Arts classroom. This would fall under the Utah Core English Language Arts grade 1 curriculum, standard 5: With guidance and support from adults, demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships and nuances in word meanings; Objective C: Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., note places at home that are cozy).
The game displays alphabet letters in a bowl of soup. There are questions or fill-in-the-blanks in which you use the mix of letters in the soup bowl to form a word to answer or complete the sentence. This game features an interactive way to engage students in reading, writing, spelling, and language comprehension. For example, one of the questions from the interactive is, What days are the strongest? Saturday and Sunday, because the others are ____days. The bowl of soup will contain the letters arranged randomly. First, to solve the puzzle, students would need to read the prompt, be able to understand the meaning, and diagnose what the missing word could be, and spell it out. The answer in this case is WEAK. The game is actually very humorous and plays on words. Students will learn through this figurative language exercise and will laugh and have fun as well.
How do astronauts keep clean in space? They take meteor_______.
